    The hard part of a hotel stay isn't understanding the desk — it's finding your own sentence in time. These 20 chunks cover booking through check-out, ready to use whole.

    Hotel English has a particular shape: what you say matters more than what you hear. The front desk's lines are highly predictable, and if you miss one there's a screen and a gesture to fall back on. But changing rooms, asking for a late check-out, reporting that the hot water isn't hot — those all start with you speaking first.

    The 20 chunks below cover a whole stay: booking and asking about availability, checking in, something wrong in the room, extra requests, checking out and leaving bags. It's a short list because hotel situations are genuinely narrow — these 20 will carry you through most of them.

    How to work through this page

    Could I get a late check-out? is the direct version. Add until 2 p.m. if you want to name a time. Most hotels decide based on the day's occupancy, so keep it a request rather than an announcement — the rising intonation does real work here.

    check in or check-in?

    check in is the verb (I'd like to check in); hyphenated check-in is the noun (What time is check-in?). You can't hear the difference when speaking — it only matters when you're emailing the hotel.
