Hotel English: 20 Chunks for the Whole Stay
The hard part of a hotel stay isn't understanding the desk — it's finding your own sentence in time. These 20 chunks cover booking through check-out, ready to use whole.

Hotel English has a particular shape: what you say matters more than what you hear. The front desk's lines are highly predictable, and if you miss one there's a screen and a gesture to fall back on. But changing rooms, asking for a late check-out, reporting that the hot water isn't hot — those all start with you speaking first.
The 20 chunks below cover a whole stay: booking and asking about availability, checking in, something wrong in the room, extra requests, checking out and leaving bags. It's a short list because hotel situations are genuinely narrow — these 20 will carry you through most of them.

How to work through this page
- 1Start with the problem-reporting lines. For booking and check-in you can point at a screen. For a broken shower you can't.
- 2Notice frames like `The [item] is not working`. The bracket is a slot — swap the word and you have a new sentence. One item bought, ten sentences delivered.
- 3Practise the intonation, not just the words.
Could I get a late check-out?rising is a request; flat, it sounds like an announcement — and you'll get a different response.
Why frames pay off so well is covered in What are chunks? A complete guide. For eating out, see Restaurant English.
Frequently asked questions
How do I ask for a late check-out?
Could I get a late check-out? is the direct version. Add until 2 p.m. if you want to name a time. Most hotels decide based on the day's occupancy, so keep it a request rather than an announcement — the rising intonation does real work here.
Something's broken but I don't know the word for it
The thing in the bathroom isn't working plus a photo on your phone solves it nine times out of ten. The frame The [item] is not working on this page takes something just as happily — reporting the problem matters more than naming the object.
check in or check-in?
check in is the verb (I'd like to check in); hyphenated check-in is the noun (What time is check-in?). You can't hear the difference when speaking — it only matters when you're emailing the hotel.
How do I ask for a room without a reservation?
Do you have any rooms available tonight? covers it. Follow with How much is it per night? for the price. No introduction or preamble needed — front-desk exchanges in English move faster and more directly than many learners expect.
